City University follows its source to the Northampton Institute, created in 1852, and named after the Marquees of Northampton, who gave the arrive on which the Institute was constructed, between Northampton Square and St John Street in Livingston. The Institute was secured to accommodate the training and welfare of the neighborhood populace. It was constituted under the City of London Parochial Charities Act (1883), with the goal of "the advancement of the mechanical ability, general learning, well being and prosperity of youngsters and ladies fitting in with the poorer classes".

The six unique offices at the Institute were: Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering; Artistic Crafts; Domestic Economy and Women's Trades; Electra-Chemistry; Horology (the exploration of time and specialty of clock-production); and Mechanical Engineering and Metal Trades. 

twentieth century In 1903–04 a different Technical Optics office was secured. In 1909 the first understudies fit the bill for University of London BSD degrees in Engineering as interior understudies. Since 1909 the Institute had been included in flight training, and in 2009 the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences praised the century of air transportation at City. In 1908 the Institute was utilized for the Olympic Games. Boxing occurred at the Institute. 

The Institute was assigned a "School of Advanced Technology" in 1957. In 1961 the Institute's inclusion in Information Science started with the presentation of a course on "Gathering and Communicating Scientific Knowledge". In 1966 City got its Royal Charter, turning into The City University to mirror the establishment's nearby connections with the City of London. In 1971 the Apollo 15 space travelers went to City University and displayed the Vice-Chancellor, Tat, with a bit of hotness shield from the Apollo 15 rocket.
 
In October 1995 it was declared that City University would consolidate with both the St Bartholomew School of Nursing & Midwifery and the Charter house College of Radiography, multiplying the quantity of understudies in Metropolis' Institute of Health Sciences to around 2,500. 

City University framed a vital cooperation with Queen Mary, University of London in April 2001. In May 2001, a significant fire in the College Building gutted the fourth carpet work places and top. In August 2001 City University and the Inns of Court School of Law consented to consolidation. Emulating a gift from Sir John Case's Foundation, a mufti-million pound building was constructed at 106 Bun slope Row for the Case Business School.
